Deserted Island Design Books – What would you choose?

What are your 10 favourite design books? If you were stuck on a deserted island and you only had 10 design-related books, what would you choose?

Mine are, in no particular order...
Pattern Design: A Period Design Sourcebook, Sian Evans
Typomofo: Type Morphing Into Forms, Page One
Seven Hundred Penguins
Elements of Typographic Style, Robert Bringhurst
The Art of Looking Sideways, Alan Fletcher
It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be, Paul Arden
How to be a Graphic Designer Without Loosing Your Soul, Adrian Shaughnessy
Letraset Catalogues
Letterpress: The Allure of the Handmade, David Jury
... hmmm, that's only nine.

The books don't need to be exclusively about graphic design – perhaps they books that inspire your creative output or help define your direction. Record your favourites in the comment section below.

ISTD Assessment 2010 | Introduction from John McMillan

"Each year ISTD offers a range of projects briefs that are written for students. Stating the obvious? Yes, but it’s worth pointing out that our aims are not just to provide opportunities for students to gain membership of ISTD. We understand how students undertake projects – in conjunction with tutors and their peers – and, as such, each project should stimulate and encourage creative approaches that are not limited by prescribed outcomes. However, this freedom is tempered by the necessity to express typographic skills – albeit creatively.
This aspect of submissions is often the weak area. Text matter is often handled with little or no attention to detail. The whole project, from the folder, the writing and presentation of strategy, specifications and development work through to the final proposals reflects the student. Ensure that all text matter has been checked for typographic detail – this, in part, will distinguish good typographic design from merely attractive graphics.
In our Assessment we make value judgments of the work by a thorough process that demands evidence of not only creativity but also a level of typographic ability that can merit an offer of ISTD membership.
To state the obvious – again – make sure the evidence of typographic craft is there."
John McMillan, Education Officer (UK)

A brief introduction to the ISTD Student Assessment Scheme

The International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) is a professional body for typography that aims to inform and inspire typographers, graphic designers, writers and educators engaged in the field of visual communication.
The ISTD Student Assessment scheme is the most thorough and effective and is used as a benchmark by educators around the world.
The Society has always given a high priority to supporting graphic design/communication students at many levels. The Annual Student Assessment, initiated in 1977, accepts work from around the world to assessments in six countries. The inaugural Australasian Assessment was held in Melbourne last year, adding significantly to those already running in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Lebanon and South Africa.
